Foundations of Indigenous Law

This micro-credential will offer learners the opportunity to study Indigenous concepts of law, legal orders and legal systems, specifically from the worldviews of Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek Nations. Participants will explore how Indigenous law emulates the operating laws of nature that work in harmony with the changing cycles of life. The roles of Creation stories and wampum teachings in maintaining Indigenous law will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain how Indigenous law and legal systems interact with Western law and legal systems.  
  2. Identify how Indigenous principles, values and Creation stories inform Indigenous Law.
  3. Discuss what the function of wampum is in maintaining Indigenous law.
