Admission Support for Mature Students

Mature student guidelines may allow admission to applicants who do not have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and who have been away from formal education for a certain period of time. Certain high school credits or academic testing may be required. Criteria for admitting mature students vary somewhat depending on the program and partner institution. Contact registrar@fnti.net or call 613-827-2475.

Mature Student Testing FAQ

Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)

PLAR is a systemic process to identify, document, assess and recognize the abilities and knowledge a learner has developed throughout their life through both formal and informal learning experiences. A portfolio is created by the student, demonstrating their knowledge in relation to their learning and career goals. This process provides alternative pathways to formal credits in academic or professional training programs. PLAR is also used by FNTI in the classroom as a learning and evaluation process.

FNTI is a recognized leader in the field of PLAR. Our unique PLAR methods value and recognize the cultural diversity, experience, and Indigenous knowledge of our students in ground-breaking ways that include learner assessment and program evaluation.

High School Diploma Equivalencies

The Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE), the Basic Training and Skills Development - Level 5 (BTSD) or the Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) are all considered equivalent to the Ontario high school diploma for entrance to college certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programs. They do not prepare applicants for entrance to degree programs.
