Working Effectively with Indigenous Clients

This training will provide learners with the foundational skills and competencies required to work effectively with Indigenous clients.  Through discussion and activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the gifts, challenges and worldviews of the Indigenous Peoples they serve.  Participants will begin to develop a “cultural toolkit,” filled with best practices and traditional techniques, for use in practice that will equip practitioners to respectfully serve First Nation, Métis and Inuit members and communities.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Investigate cultural considerations, strategies, and techniques in practice that lead to, or away from, effective and ethical work with Indigenous clients.
  2. Collaboratively develop a culturally and age-appropriate toolkit to use when working with at-risk youth.
  3. Demonstrate the use of appropriate communications that strengthen respectful relationships when engaging with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
