Nyá:wen to all of our staff, students, board members, partners, stakeholders and everyone else who has contributed to making 40 years possible. We would not be here without you!

History

Located on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, on the beautiful shores of the Bay of Quinte, in Ontario, FNTI stands as a living legacy of Indigenous innovation, resilience and resurgence.

Founded in 1985, FNTI transformed the former military airfield Camp Mohawk, a WWI and WWII Royal Canadian Air Force training base, into a distinguished Indigenous post-secondary institute, where over 5,000 Commonwealth pilots and technicians were trained. FNTI carries that legacy forward by offering the only Indigenous aviation training program of its kind in Canada, alongside a full spectrum of academic programming grounded in Indigenous worldviews.

As we celebrate 40 years of Sharing and Learning, FNTI honours its proud beginnings as a First Nations mandated institute, deeply rooted in community vision and leadership. FNTI was founded from a need to train First Nations administrators for Band offices.  Since then, our programs have grown in reach and significance and are rooted in First Nation priorities and Indigenous ways of knowing. FNTI now has two Indigenous degree programs, the Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work and Bachelor of Indigenous Justice accredited by the Indigenous Advanced Education Skills Council mandated through the Indigenous Institutes Act, 2017. FNTI also, offers programming in Health Sciences, Indigenous Governance, Public Administration, Food Sciences and Journalism.

Today, FNTI is forging new paths in research, innovation, and technology, guided by the wisdom of our ancestors and the needs of future generations. FNTI is more than an institute, it is a beacon of transformation within the post-secondary landscape. By integrating traditional knowledge with rigorous academic and technical training, we prepare learners to lead with integrity, protect the wellness of their communities, and shape a sustainable, self-determined future.

At FNTI, we continue Sharing and Learning, honouring the past, empowering the present, and building a future where Indigenous education leads the way.
