Foundations of Indigenous Law

This training will offer learners the opportunity to study Indigenous concepts of law, legal orders and legal systems, specifically from the worldviews of Haudenosaunee and Anishaabek Nations. Participants will explore how Indigenous law emulates the operating laws of nature that work in harmony with the changing cycles of life. The roles of Creation stories and wampum teachings in maintaining Indigenous law will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain how Indigenous law and legal systems interact with Western law and legal systems.  
  2. Discover a variety of perspectives to better understanding Natural or Universal laws in order to find application in everyday life.
  3. Identify how Indigenous principles, values, original instructions and Creation stories inform Indigenous law. 
  4. Discuss the function of wampum in maintaining Indigenous law.
