With 93% Employment Rate after Graduation, Indigenous Learning Institute Places Importance on Education and Being Workplace Ready

(Tyendinaga, ON) November 1, 2018 – Today marks the beginning of Canada Career Month, a month-long awareness campaign to advance the conversation of meaningful employment and the abundance of transferable skills that Canadians possess. First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) is proud to celebrate and to recognize this month from the perspective of an Indigenous learning institution.


“At FNTI, we care about our learner’s success of school but it doesn’t stop there,” said Suzanne Brant, President of FNTI. “We care about our learner’s transition from school to workplace, a transition that is often neglected in traditional learning institutions but is critical to bridge the gap between educated and work ready.”


Not only does FNTI consider what jobs and skills are needed in the communities from which FNTI learners are from, FNTI also ensures its learners have practical skills through work-placements and co-ops. The programs offered at FNTI are centered around what jobs and roles are needed in Indigenous communities across Canada.


“We believe this is a unique advantage to our learners. We center our curriculum and programs based on need and employability within the communities we serve,” continued Brant. “Our learners go back to their communities equipped with the skills and experience they need to be workplace ready.”


At FNTI, graduation rates are 86% and work placements after graduation are 93%. These numbers are much higher than national averages for Indigenous students at traditional learning institutions.

Student’s at FNTI also have a favourable impression of these work placements saying that it gives them hands-on experience, empowers them to build relations with agencies in their communities, and also allows the community agencies to see talent located within their community. The learner-centered approach at FNTI ensures that students receive the support they need at schools while also supporting their transitions to the workplace to ensure success.



FNTI is an Indigenous institute offering unique educational opportunities aimed at enhancing the capacity and strength of learners and communities. FNTI delivers culturally-rich post-secondary programs in partnership with several Ontario colleges and universities. Courses often offered in an intensive mode allows learners to learn while they continue to work and participate in their communities across Canada.
