NEWS & EVENTS
(Tyendinaga, ON) December 21, 2018 – Today we mark the Winter Solstice and herald a new path for the First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) and Indigenous post-secondary education.
Solstice is a time to reflect on events of the past year. As we look back over the joy of sharing education with our students, and celebrating their successes, we feel gratitude for the opportunity to work with beautiful communities of First Nations, Metis and Inuit people from across Ontario and Canada. As with every day of the year, today at Solstice, we give thanks to our Mother the Earth, to the cycles of Earth and the stars, to the precious waters of the world, and all plant life which sustains us.
Since the Ontario Government’s Indigenous Institutes Act was ratified in December 2017, we have come closer than ever to something we have worked towards for centuries: Indian Control of Indian Education.
With the New Year ahead, we have much to look forward to. FNTI has completed the first step towards being considered an independent post-secondary institute in a stand-alone sector in Ontario. Look for new Indigenous based programs in the New Year.
In 2019, we’ll be expanding our degrees and diplomas in a variety of fields including agriculture, social and community justice, midwifery. We’re excited to enter our busy recruitment season in January and open up FNTI to a whole new cohort of students. We’re proud to help our indigenous students learn, grow, and ultimately find meaningful employment in their field.
We are excited for all that 2019 will bring!
From our family to yours, happy holidays.
Suzanne Brant, President of FNTI
