First Harvest at FNTI Community Garden 

 

(Tyendinaga, ON) -- Yesterday, the employee community at the First Nations Technical Institute had their first opportunity to collectively harvest from their new community gardens on campus. 

 

The institute’s social committee began the initiative to create community vegetable gardens in early spring. They hosted a feasting potluck to gather funds for raised beds, seeds and seedlings. The FNTI community came together to support the project in high numbers. 

 

The bulk of yesterday’s harvest were shallot tops, with more bounty to come soon after from the three sisters bed -- corn, beans, squash -- as well as tomatoes, kale, shallots, and other onion varieties. Sunflowers, marigolds, and zinnia also were planted to attract the local pollinators. 

 

“Many of us spend a good deal of our time here at work,” said garden leader Alicia Peltsch and manager of data collection and institutional analysis. “Designing this community garden helps a group of us to enjoy our love of gardening and helps us to pass along traditions and knowledges to eager learners.”
